Clarence Blackpool Mahoney is a low-grade intelligence analyst at MI5 specialising in Middle Eastern terrorism. His family believes he works as a civil servant for the Department of Environment. He is obsessed with secrecy.
Unbeknown to him, all the members of his family also have secret lives. His wife, Suzanne, is having an affair with his best friend, his son, Bobbie, still at school, has been seduced by a passionate, Mediterranean-type older woman, and his daughter, Rosie, 15, has a fixation about revealing her exotic underwear in public places.
By a quirk of fate, food poisoning at MI5's canteen puts out of action the agency's top surveillance experts and Clarence is drafted in to follow a known Arab terrorist called Abou Khaddabra who has entered Britain to check on his secret bank account. It was Clarence who two years earlier while piecing together various jigsaw pieces of intelligence, had discovered the existence of Abou and his terrorist group called Black January.
Set in the late 1980s when Palestinian terrorism was at its height in Britain, the consequences for the MI5 analyst are both hilarious and life-threatening as he follows the terrorist, first in London and then across to France where his mission is complicated by the arrival of a female Mossad agent seeking to recruit him.
Dramatic events unfold after Clarence is kidnapped by Abou and held in a house in the French town of Villedieu. MI5's legendary "watcher", Gerald Treetops, arrives after emerging from his sickbed, but runs up against the Mossad agent. There is a violent confrontation, and a wounded Abou who has a quixotic grasp of the English language, escapes. The final showdown takes place back in London, with Clarence, the Mossad agent and Abou at the heart of the drama. Clarence's days as an MI5 desk man are over for ever.
About the Author
Michael Evans has been a journalist all his life. For the past 40 years he has been writing for a variety of English newspapers, the last 20 of which have been for The Times. During this time he has specialised in Defence, the military and the hidden world of espionage.
He has been a keen writer and teller of tales, which has kept his family entertained for years. After much persuasion he has finally put pen to paper to create something for a wider audience.

For twenty years he never worked outside of MI5 headquarters until this store occurred. Clearance never told his wife and children where he really worked, they thought he worked in the Department of Environment. In my opinion this book could make a great stage play. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It had a great sense of humour throughout, plenty of twists and turns and enough insight into the spy world to show you that this author really knows their stuff. Will definitely read the next installment!
